ANOTHER ONE MILLION DOLLAR VERDICT
Richard S. Griffin of The Griffin Law Firm, P.C. has obtained his second million dollar or more verdict. In a personal injury lawsuit against a furniture and appliance store in Dalton, a jury returned a verdict for $760,000.00 in compensatory damages and $240,000.00 in punitive damages. The plaintiff was a mother of three and was injured when a Sub Zero refrigerator fell over and pinned her against the corner of a granite counter top island in her kitchen. The refrigerator fell over suddenly and without warning when the plaintiff simply opened the door of the refrigerator. The Defendants were found to be negligent by failing to install the anti-tilt kit which is required to prevent the Sub Zero refrigerator from tipping over since it is top heavy (the condenser is on the top rather than the bottom of the unit). The plaintiff sustained a herniated disc in her lower back with permanent nerve root damage, as well as, serious injury to her neck. Her past medical treatment totaled approximately $80,000.00 of pain management and other conservative treatment (primarily injection therapy). Her future medical treatment was projected by the treating physician to be an additional $39,000.00. On cross examination, Richard S. Griffin obtained an admission from the Defendant's installer that his installation did not comply with the manufacturer's installation requirements by failing to "lock and block" the refrigerator. The installer also admitted that he knew that if the refrigerator is not "locked and block", then serious injury or death could occur. Locking the unit means lowering the feet to raise the refrigerator off of its wheels. Blocking the refrigerator means installing a board above the refrigerator which prevents it from tipping over. This million dollar verdict was ground breaking for the Dalton (Whitfield County) area which traditionally has awarded low jury verdicts.

He received his B.A. in Political Science from David Lipscomb University and his Juris Doctor Degree from Cumberland School of Law. He is a member of the American Bar Associcaiton and the Association of Trial Lawyers Of America. His areas of expertise include personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death, worker's compensation, and social security disability.

Stefan Turkheimer graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia School of Law in 2004 where he was on the editorial board of the Journal of Intellectual Property, was a finalist in the 1st year Moot Court competition and a semifinalist in the 2nd year Mock Trial competition. He attended Wake Forest University and Georgia State University for his undergraduate education.
Prior to Joining the Griffin Law Firm, Mr. Turkheimer worked as a prosecutor in the Western Judicial Circuit and was the Finance Director for Mark Taylor's Gubernatorial Campaign.
